Welcome to Chicago!

You’ve chosen to live in the Great American City, and you won’t be disappointed.

Chicago has everything you could want in a city: wonderful neighborhoods, a thriving downtown, world-class cultural and educational institutions, an excellent public transportation system and fine shopping, restaurants and recreational opportunities.

Others agree. A story in the Wall Street Journal called Chicago “American’s urban paradise,” while a recent article in the New York Times said Chicago, “the quintessential American city…enters the 21st century as a prosperous, well-governed model for the rest of the country.”

If you have children, or are thinking of having them, you’ll be impressed with the improvements in the Chicago Public Schools.  We’ve spent almost $2 billion on capital improvements in the last five years, and our strengthened educational programs have been hailed by President Clinton as a national model for school reform.

Wherever you choose to live in Chicago, I hope you’ll get involved in community activities: block clubs, neighborhood organizations, community policing and advisory boards for schools, parks and libraries.  Our longstanding tradition of community participation is one of the main reasons why Chicago is the best city in the nation in which to live, work and raise a family.

Sincerely,
Richard M. Daley
Mayor
